Following almost three decades of civil war, Angola is slowly rebuilding itself as a country. War first broke out in 1975 when the country gained independence from Portugal.
A power struggle ensued between the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). Even though peace seemed on the cards in 1992, intermittent fighting ensued. It is estimated that over 4 million people were displaced during the civil war. Today power remains in the hands of the MPLA, under President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, following the death of UNITA’s Jonas Savimbi in 2002.
Angola is bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia and Zambia. Luanda is Angola’s capital city and the country spans over 1,246,700 km2 and ranks 23rd in size in the world.
The main ethnic groups include the Ovimbundu, Kimbundu,Bakongo, Mestico and Europeans. Portuguese is the main language, but Bunto and other African dialects are also spoken. Angola is known for its tropical climate which has two seasons - hot and wet, and dry.
There are about 91 nationalities living in Angola. The cost of living in Luanda is high, and the capital was ranked as the most expensive city for expatriates in 2010. The country has seen an
influx of Chinese workers, estimated at over 100 000, who help Angola reconstruct its infrastructure. Angola’s economy is primarily driven by oil production, which accounts for about 85% of the GDP. The country has been a member of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) since 2006. Angola’s economic growth over recent years has mainly been attributed to oil exports, as the commodity commands high prices globally. Diamonds are also an important commodity and contribute 5% to the GDP. However, Angola’s economy stalled temporarily with the most recent global economic crisis.
Since the war, the country has seen growth in both its agriculture and construction industries. Most of the population works in the agriculture sector. The country fell into debt when it started rebuilding its infrastructure, and in 2009 Angola signed a Stand-by Arrangement with the International Monetary Fund to help manage its natural reserves.
I would like to acknowledge the AGS professionalism and team LED BY Gaspard in Luanda. They are organized, experienced and professional. They are by far the best AGS team that I have had from my previous moves in the Cameroun, and Gabon. Pauline, please extend my gratitude to Gilles de Matos and Gaspard.
